Footy legend Anthony Koutoufides will this weekend announce his candidacy in the coming federal election.
The Herald Sun can reveal that the former Carlton star and Melbourne lord mayoral candidate will run as an independent in the federal seat of Melbourne.
The seat is currently held by Greens leader Adam Bandt with a margin of 10.2 per cent.
Multiple sources close to the Koutoufides’ campaign said he will officially announce his candidacy over the weekend.
It’s understood his tilt for Lord Mayor, where he eventually finished fourth behind the Liberals, Greens and victorious incumbent Nick Reece, inspired him to pursue a political career.
Mr Koutoufides’ was contacted for comment.
In November last year, Mr Koutoufides flagged an intention to throw his hat in the ring.
“I’ll be back ... I’ve got a taste for it, and I’m looking forward to the future,” he said at the time.
In a statement, Adam Bandt pointed to the fact that the Greens secured more votes than Koutoufides in the City of Melbourne race.
“I never take the seat of Melbourne for granted and will campaign hard whoever runs,” Mr Bandt said.
“I’ll be pushing to get dental into Medicare for everyone, wipe student debt, fix the housing and rental crisis and stop new coal and gas mines, while other candidates will no doubt make the case for taking us backwards.”
