Another truck crash at scene of notorious Southbank intersection

Another horror crash has unfolded at the same notorious Southbank intersection where a truck ploughed into a group of pedestrians.

A truck appeared to crash into a car as it turned left from City Rd onto Power St in Southbank.

There has been another collision on the Southbank road where a truck hit and injured five pedestrians earlier this year.

A truck clipped a car as it turned left from City Rd into Power St on Tuesday.

A police officer on scene said nobody was injured but something needed to be done about the intersection.

The driver, a young woman, was visibly shaken but uninjured.

A witness who helped the young woman afterwards said it was a “terrible intersection”.

“I just saw her car being dragged around the corner,” the bystander said.

“Lots of people were yelling, he (the truck driver) had no idea he had hit her.”

“Motorists should follow the directions of emergency services and avoid the area by using City Road and Montague Street to reach the West Gate Freeway,” they said.

“Heavy vehicles are advised to detour via Whiteman Street, Normanby Road and Montague Street.”

Tanya Sarah, 23, who lives in an apartment building located at the busy intersection, called for trucks to be banned at the “dangerous” intersection.

She said the the crash renewed her concerns about the congested corner after safety bollards installed after a crash earlier in the year left five pedestrians seriously injured were damaged by another truck just a day after being installed.

“It’s happened back to back in three months. It’s crazy,” Ms Sarah said.

“It’s just honestly disappointing they haven’t made an effort to ban trucks when it’s been such a safety concern time and time again,” she said.

“There was no ambulance although the car looks pretty damaged.”

She was thankful Tuesday’s crash was not as dangerous as the crash in late April that injured five pedestrians.

“Luckily this time the pole didn’t fall and I don’t think anyone was hurt.”

Southbank Residents Association president Tony Penna said he wasn’t surprised there was another collision.

“Everyone messaged me Tony it’s just happened again,” he said.

“To a car that’s turning left, it’s not intuitive ... that a truck is going to cut out in front of them.

“(The intersection) is an accident waiting to happen.”

Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp has responded to the accident and tweeted she was thankful there’s no reported injuries.

She said she was committed to working with the government for immediate and long-term solutions to the intersection, which had bollards installed to protect pedestrians following the first crash.

“I know this may cause distress for Southbank residents who are already concerned about this intersection,” she said.

“We are totally committed to ensuring the Victorian Government delivers a safer intersection for motorists and pedestrians.

“I’m in regular contact with Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll, and the Member for Albert Park, Martin Foley, about this intersection and have been assured that the Victorian Government is urgently working on a permanent solution.”

Earlier this year, Frank Rogers, 46, was charged and bailed over a tragic smash that injured five people.

Mr Rogers is alleged to have smashed into pedestrians in front of shocked onlookers.

The crash sparked outrage from concerned residents who called for an immediate fix to the intersection.
