Another 25 level crossing removals have been locked in as part of the state government’s budget, with 110 in total to go by 2030.
The Andrews government will surge ahead with upgrades to more stations, including controversial changes to the Hudsons Rd level crossing at Spotswood.
The Werribee Line will be level crossing free by 2030 after the government announced plans to overhaul stations at Hudsons Rd and Maddox Rd in Newport with elevated rail bridges.
The level crossing at Maidstone St in Altona will also be removed.
Another seven level crossings will be upgraded on the Frankston Line, including at Wickham Rd in Highett, McDonald St in Mordialloc, Station St at Aspendale and Armstrongs Rd at Seaford.
An extra eight level crossings are set to be removed on the Upfield Line, which runs through Brunswick and Parkville, including at Brunswick Rd and Albion, Dawson and Victoria Streets.
The government has pledged $650m for the Melton train line upgrade, including four level crossing removals, a new Melton station and VLocity trains that will increase capacity by up to 50 per cent.
Level crossings at Corburns, Exford and Ferris Roads in Melton and Hopkins Rd in Truganina will be gone by 2028.
The removal of level crossings at Old Calder Highway and Watsons Rd in Diggers Rest will see the Sunbury Line level crossing free by 2026.
The government also plans to replace the Ruthven St level crossing in Macleod, on the Hurstbridge Line, with a new rail bridge by 2027.
The government has already removed 70 “dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne”.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the government was “doing what matters for Victorian commuters”.
