Aldi supermarket rolling out self-serve checkouts in Melbourne

A major change to Aldi’s signature checkout system is being rolled out in a Melbourne store after a successful trial interstate.

Aldi supermarkets are rolling out self-serve checkouts across Victorian stores after a successful trial interstate.

A store in Melbourne’s CBD will be the first to trial the new feature this month.

It’s understood the checkouts will only take card and no cash or coins.

The retail giant first launched self-serve checkouts across NSW supermarkets last year after following in the footsteps of competitors Coles and Woolworths.

At the time, a spokesman said Aldi was committed to making business decisions in line with their low cost model.

“Self-serve checkouts are a quick and convenient way for customers to shop,” they said.

“They also drive business efficiencies, freeing up employees to focus on customer service, stock replenishment and store presentation.

“Pending trial results, there is potential that self-serve checkouts will be rolled out to Aldi stores nationally.”

Although feedback was mainly positive, some disgruntled customers took to social media to complain about the change.

“The more people that use this crap like they have at Coles and Woolies, the more Australian jobs that are gone,” one shopper said.

“I’d rather use a human being thanks and keep someone in a job,” another said.

A third shopper said they “refused” to use a self serve checkout unless they had to.
