MELBOURNE’S AFL football players are kicking up a pre-season house selling frenzy.

And with sales likely to return millions of dollars they are showing skills on the property market that could rival their on field talents.

From Hawks star Jarryd Roughead to the recently retired Magpie ruckman Darren Jolly at least seven properties with football player owners are on the market at the moment.

Today will see Roughead auction his first Melbourne house in Burwood.

The three-bedroom house is being sold by Jellis Craig’s Talia Tomaino who expects it to fetch more than $650,000.

“It was his first property when he came to Melbourne from country Victoria,” Ms Tomaino said.

It will be joined by a Toorak house developed by Collingwood player Ben Sinclair and his half-brother former Geelong player turned Roc Projects developer Will Slade.

Michael Armstrong from Kay and Burton said the development was as good as he had seen in the area.

Darren Jolly and wife Deanne, who self-renovated and styled their Surrey Hills on days off and after training, will auction the house on March 29 as the pair step into the development industry.

“My recovery (last year) was getting out and getting on the tools — that helped loosen up my body,” Mr Jolly said.

Paul Richards, director of Bekdon Richards, said the renovation was one of the best he’d seen in 13 years in real estate.

The Cloke family home in Ringwood has also just hit the market, having been home to four AFL players over the past 20 years: David, Jason, Cameron and Travis.

Fletchers real estate agent Traci Stella has the property listed for sale between $850,000 and $950,000.

Another Hawk, Grant Birchall, is selling his apartment in Hawthown East, at auction next weekend. Jellis Craig sales agent Kevin O’Brien suggested Birchall and many other players may be trying to beat the season proper, which begins in two weeks time.

“It might be timing — once the season begins it might be a bit harder to keep their places in order,” Mr O’Brien said.

On the other side of town Essendon forward Jason Winderlich and former Bomber turned Tiger Sam Lonergan are both selling their former houses in Moonee Ponds.

And rumours hint that Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury is on the hunt for a new home in Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs.
