Aboriginal art takes on a new canvas

THIS Kombi is an unusual canvas for talented Aboriginal artist Stan Yarramunua but he’s embracing the one-of-a-kind piece, which will be auctioned to help homeless youth.

STAN Yarramunua is taking his art to the fast lane.

The talented painter is using his creative skills to cover an old Volkswagen Kombi van in traditional aboriginal paintings, in what he says will be a standout work of art.

“It’s certainly one of my more unusual commissions, but I am thrilled to take this one on,” Mr Yarramunua said.

The art, commissioned by Kombi Haus Australia, will raise much-needed funds for the Yarramunua Foundation — an organisation dedicated to helping children affected by homelessness, drug and alcohol issues.

Over a six-day period, Mr Yarramunua will compete the artwork out the front of his St Kilda-based art gallery.

Once complete, the van will be auctioned.

Mr Yarramunua said growing up with exposure to Fiztroy’s pub scene inspired him to use his art and help kids in similar situations.

“I want to give them something positive to look towards, not drugs, gambling and alcohol which is not our culture,” he said.
