CRACKS of lightning have thundered across the city, lighting up the night sky and causing travel delays for air and rail passengers.

The impressive light show was caught by photographers across Melbourne, as the storms hit the city after a week of hot weather.

The forecast storms failed to bring with them a cool change.

Temperatures were still hovering around 20C at 9pm.

Passengers at Melbourne Airport were affected, with more than 50 international and domestic flights due to depart between 8pm and 9.15pm delayed.
