Police say the taxi picked up a male passenger, believed to be in his early 20s, from Greens Rd in Dandenong South about 1.40pm on Friday.
When the driver arrived at the destination in Carrum Downs around 2pm, the passenger pulled out a knife and demanded cash.

The attacker fled the scene empty-handed after the botched robbery.
Acting Sergeant Scott West said the cabbie was a brave man following the assault.
“The male passenger held a knife to the taxi driver’s throat and demanded he hand over his money,” he said.
A resident living near the passenger’s destination said he found what could be the attacker’s clothes in his bin this morning.
