167 Victorians acclaimed in 2024 King’s Birthday honours: Footy president, medical marvels honoured

A Melbourne cooking legend, an AFL club president and the founder of a Carlton coffee mecca are among the Victorians recognised in the 2024 King’s Birthday honours.

North Melbourne footy club president Sonja Hood, Melbourne cooking doyenne Beverley Sutherland Smith and Brunetti’s founder Giorgio Angele were among hundreds of Victorians acclaimed in the 2024 King’s Birthday honours.

Ms Hood, Roos boss since 2022, was honoured with an AM also for her work as head of the Community Hubs not-for-profit organisation.

“I’m thrilled and shocked and overjoyed and overwhelmed,’’ Dr Hood told the Herald Sun.

“I’m one of those people who reads the honours every six months because I genuinely love reading all the things that people do in all corners of Australia to make the country better, and to be on that list is extraordinary.’’

Dr Hood said her time at Arden St had demonstrated what a unifying force football was.

“People come together in footy who would never come together in anything else.’’

Her tenure as North president had been “insane”, she said, but it’s a job she loved.

“I’ve had some challenges since walking into this role but I’m surrounded by some amazing people. It’s a really fabulous environment.’’

Ms Sutherland-Smith started her much-celebrated cookery classes from her Mt Waverley home in the 1960s – long before the age of celebrity cooks and Instagram food photos.

For her lifelong dedication to the culinary world, Ms Sutherland Smith was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

The home chef now well into her 80s still cooks every day and still tries new tricks and techniques in the kitchen.

“If you’re passionate, it keeps you younger,’’ she said.

The home-cooking specialist was a columnist for many newspapers including the Herald Sun, and authored 27 books including The Seasonal Kitchen and The Complete Beverley Sutherland Smith Cookbook. She still has ambitions to do one more book – a collection of her best recipes.

Ms Sutherland Smith said Peter Allen, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch and American cooking legend Julia Child were among the famous names who admired and used her recipes.

Former Herald Sun food writer Bob Hart described her as “the best recipe writer in Australia’’.

“But it’s not just about the food on your plate. It’s about the people you sit down and eat with. And if there’s good food, you can all relax and enjoy.’’

Another Melbourne culinary great, Mr Angele received an (Honorary) OAM for service to the restaurant and hospitality industry since opening the coffee and cakes mecca in Carlton in 1956.

Among dozens of medical leaders to be recognised were Melbourne allergy and asthma expert Professor Jo Douglass and Royal Melbourne Hospital gastroenterology specialist Professor David Russell who were both appointed Members of the Order of Australia (AM).

One of Melbourne’s leading experts in urban design, RMIT Emeritus Professor Michael Buxton was rewarded with an AM for his service to city planning and the community.

Six leading Victoria Police officers were saluted with the Australian Police Medal, including Mission Persons Squad Acting Detective Inspector Tony Combridge who worked on some of the biggest missing persons cases including the investigation into campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay.

Detective Sen-Sgt Angela Hantsis was honoured for her trailblazing career for women, and served with the Purana Taskforce for almost six years.

Forty-two-year veteran Supt Murray Fraser has been a champion of ethical behaviour, leading Taskforce Ceja from 2002 to investigate claims of drug-related corruption in the now disbanded Drug Squad. Seven serving police were later prosecuted.

Jewish community leader, academic and Glen Eira councillor David Zyngier, who died last November at age 72, was appointed posthumously to the Member of the Order (AM).

For decades of service to the Geelong community, Cats former vice-president and Kardinia Park historian Bob Gartland was awarded a Medal of the Order (OAM).

Local heroes also featured prominently among the OAM recipients, including Josie Cornish for her tireless work helping the Beechworth community and long-time wildlife volunteer Kay Taranto of the Wild Days Wildlife Shelter in Narre Warren.
