The package will help councils and industry continue the kerbside collection of residents’ recyclable rubbish.

The move comes in response to China’s decision to restrict the import of recyclable materials which prompted VISY to cancel some contracts with regional collection contractors.

The new plan is a stop-gap measure, until the end of June, while councils and industry find a long-term alternative.

The money is to pay for landfill charges as well as covering costs of Victoria’s three main recycling companies — SKM, VISY and Polytrade — to store waste.

A recycling industry taskforce will be established also to seek a longer-term plan for industry.

China now requires cleaner, more processed waste materials.

Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said that while recycling was ultimately a matter for councils, the government was stepping in to help councils and industry affected by China’s new rules.

“This is about protecting jobs and ensuring Victorians have confidence to continue recycling, Ms D’Ambrosio said.

“We’re already investing at record levels to manage waste in the long term and we will continue to work with industry and local government to help them address these challenges.”

Most metropolitan councils are yet to be affected by the ban.
