After days of wild weather Charters Towers authorities have issued a reminder to all residents to use their common sense.
Mayor Frank Beveridge spent Tuesday morning monitoring the Burdekin River with the Disaster Emergency Team. Mr Beveridge said the team captured footage of the river as part of a public service announcement.
“It has been constant rain for the last couple of weeks and the remainder of Cyclone (Imogen) is still affecting us,” he said.
“We have cameras on the Burdekin River.
“But we went out to shoot a safety video that will go out this week to the public.”
Charters Towers city saw 93.8mm of rainfall by 9am on Tuesday morning after rain clouds closed in on Monday night.
Mr Beveridge said there was still five to six metres of leeway before the water would cover the Burdekin Bridge.
“There is flooding at the Clarke River and roads are cut off from Charters Towers to Greenvale and we expect those roads will reopen in the coming days,” he said.
“That water will then make its way down to Charters Towers and we expect the water to go under the Burdekin Bridge and not go over.”
Despite the downpour, Mr Beveridge said the rain had been “manageable” and “common sense goes a long way”.
“It has been good steady rain so what that means is there is a lot of grass growing up so the follow up rain has not caused large erosion problems that tends to happen,” he said.
“Please don’t cross flooded bridges or creeks or travel unnecessarily.”
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting possible rainfall up to 70mm on Wednesday in Charters Towers.
