A giant waterspout was seen swirling over waters in North Queensland, leaving a group of unsuspecting local fishos “completely awe-struck.”

Whitsundays fisho Murray Story from Catch My Drift charters spotted a huge waterspout about 20m wide off the coast of Hook Island at 6.31am on Wednesday.

“It was awe-inspiring,” he said.

“We were blown away. We saw it forming from a distance and it just kept on getting bigger and bigger.

“I got about 500m away and couldn’t believe what was happening in front of us.

“The conditions were vertically still and you could just hear this thing swirling around it was the most amazing thing.

“We could see the water being picked up and swirling around in the air — it was freaky.”

He said they actually spotted a second waterspout nearby but it was less clear.

“I’ve never seen one full stop, let alone two,” Mr Story said.

“I talked to one of the local legends here Kieran McCarthy and he said mate I’ve been living here for 30 years and never seen one.”
