Townsville’s women and girls are being called on to unleash their inner speed queens and join the growing ranks of fearless females dominating the karting scene.

Karting Australia’s “Girls Race Too” program is leading the charge, smashing stereotypes and proving that motorsport is for everyone — no matter your gender.

“It’s definitely not a guys thing,” says 15-year-old kart racer Chelsea Noble, who’s a rising star on the Townsville Kart Club circuit.

“It’s something all genders can do. Girls can be even more capable, I feel, than the guys out on the track.”

Chelsea’s love for karting started with her brother and dad, who raced dirt karts. Now, she’s a regular at the track, where she thrives in the “fun, social” atmosphere.

“100 per cent, I give them a run for their money,” Chelsea added.

The “Girls Race Too” program is all about getting more women and girls of all ages into the driver’s seat — or onto the sidelines as officials and volunteers.

“Karting is one of the only sports where men and women compete together,” says Julie Powers, Townsville Kart Club’s secretary.

“Once they’ve got their helmets and gear on, you can’t tell whether someone’s a male or a female.

“So we’re just all about encouraging everyone to put their hand up and get involved.”

The Townsville Kart Club is rolling out dedicated “Girls Race Too” events alongside their popular “come and try” days starting next year.

For those curious to see what it’s all about, the club holds monthly race meets, with the next event set for November 23.

Spectators are welcome to come along for free and soak up the high-octane action.
