Five Townsville teenagers allegedly joy-riding in a stolen Mazda were arrested by police after tyre spikes were deployed on Sunday night.

Acting Senior Sergeant Anthony Kirkham said the car was stopped and the teenagers arrested about 11.30pm in Heatley.

The dog squad was deployed and the vehicle intercepted on Nathan St between Fulham Rd and Charles St where a cordon was set and the tyres were stung, Sgt Kirkham said.

The youths decamped and were found about 30 minutes later near University Rd, he said.

Five 13 and 14-year-olds were in custody, all charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

One of the youths was charged with possession of break-in materials and some of the group had been wanted for breach of bail.

The Mazda CX8 station wagon was stolen from Aitkenvale on April 14, Acting Snr Sgt Kirkham said.
