Belgian tourist, 26, dies in scooter crash on Magnetic Island holiday

A 26-year-old Belgian woman has died after crashing into a street sign while riding a scooter during a holiday on Magnetic Island.

A Belgian woman has died after crashing into a street sign while riding a scooter during a holiday on Magnetic Island.

Police said the 26-year-old tourist was riding a motor scooter along Horseshoe Bay Road in Horseshoe Bay just after 3pm on Friday when she crashed into a street sign.

Members of the public gave her first aid before emergency services arrived at the crash scene.

She was rushed to Townsville University Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery but she sadly succumbed to her injuries and died around 9pm.

Police said authorities are working with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to notify family in Belgium.

Investigations are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
