The Snitch: Legal eagles eager to represent NRL star Hayne

Lawyers eager to represent NRL star Jarryd Hayne through his aggravated sexual assault case have been calling The Snitch to ask for a contact number for the NRL star’s manager Wayne Beavis.

CALLS OF DUTY

It seems Jarryd Hayne’s manager Wayne Beavis has been fielding a few calls from lawyers eager to represent the NRL star in his sexual assault case.

The Snitch has received phone calls from a number of legal eagles asking for Beavis’ number. The manager said he had taken a few calls but wouldn’t give details.

More will be revealed when Hayne fronts Burwood Local Court for his first appearance on December 10.

CASE’S SEPARATE DATES

High-profile criminal lawyer Ljupka Subeska will get her day in court this month to defend herself against allegations stemming from a brawl with her ex’s family.

However there won’t be a Christmas family reunion at Sutherland Local Court, with the warring parties set down for hearings four days apart.

Ms Subeska has been listed to appear at a court hearing on December 21 after she pleaded not guilty to three charges — affray, common assault, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Her former father-in-law, Mile Dimovski, has not entered a plea to the same charges and will front court four days earlier.

The charges stem from a brawl which was filmed — and sent far and wide — at a Rockdale kids soccer carnival this year.

Ms Subeska, who declined to comment to The Snitch yesterday, has previously told media she was terrified and pushed her ex-husband’s father’s fist out of her face.

An AVO taken out by police for Ms Subeska against Mr Dimovski will also be heard on December 17.

NOT SO FINE JOKE

Guess which male Sydney judge joked about parking illegally so he could attend a Christmas function?

The judge parked his car in a loading zone that expired at 6pm. Only problem was the time was just after 5.30pm.

When this was pointed out, the judge joked that he knew enough about the law to get out of a parking ticket.

Didn’t former judge Marcus Einfeld once say something similar about a speeding fine?

THE BAND’S BACK

It was a walk down memory lane for Mark Tedeschi QC on Friday.

The former crown prosecutor crossed to the private bar late last year but was engaged by his old employer, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, to prosecute killer Daniel James Holdom of the murders of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce Pearce.

A couple of guilty pleas later and Mr Tedeschi had Holdom walking into the King St Supreme Court cells with two life sentences.

Equal kudos goes to his junior barrister, Victoria Engel, who carried the case from charge to sentence while studying for a move to the bar.

POETIC JUSTICE

There was an interesting touch at Waverley Local Court last week during the case of Daniel Adrian Carr, who had to be taken down by a police leg sweep after resisting arrest.

Magistrate Michael Barko cast an eye over police facts outlining the lengths the officers took to subdue a highly intoxicated Carr and remarked: “I note there seems to be some poetic justice in the matter.”

Carr pointed to his head and replied: “Yes, your honour, (several) stitches.”

HANGING UP THE WIG

Justice Ruth McColl, a female trailblazer in the NSW legal system, will hang up the wig.

The Court of Appeal judge will be sent off with a retirement ceremony in the NSW Supreme Court on January 27.

A formal ceremony, which is open to the public, will be held on level 13 of the Supreme Court building on Tuesday.

Trailblazer Justice Ruth McColl will retire next month.
