A revived souvlaki shop that graced North Hobart about 10 years ago has returned to its old haunt.

The owners of Parthenon Souvlaki Bar, which has been open since last week, say that the new store caters to both late-night partygoers and early birds who want something to start their day right.

The store on Elizabeth Street is one of two in Hobart, with the other location further north at Moonah.

Saky Ahuja, Himan Kapoor and Thomas Strates are the trio looking after the new North Hobart shop.

“We wanted to get the authentic Greek recipe of souvlaki’s back home,” Mr Ahuja said.

“We opened one in Moonah, and people loved it. We just wanted to open another one in North Hobart.”

Since opening, Mr Ahuja said business at the new store had been going well despite the cost of living pressures, inflation, and other challenging economic conditions.

“The prices that we charge are pretty good for people.

“If a person comes and gets a souvlaki, it’s pretty filling, and I don’t think they need anything else; plus, it’s reasonably priced.”

As well as the iconic Greek staple, the Parthenon sells coffee and desserts.

“We’re also going to be getting loukoumades, which is going to be a big thing for Hobart because we haven’t seen any shop selling them,” Mr Ahuja said.

“It’s like fried, small Greek doughnuts that can be filled with Nutella, Fererro Rocher, strawberry and pistachio.

“For breakfast, we have both an egg, bacon and halloumi souvlaki and one called veggie goodness that’s got hash browns, zucchini, salsa and mayo.”

Mr Ahuja said that the new store and the shop at Moonah provided a sense of nostalgia.

“They should expect the same taste from 10 years ago; it’s literally the same, and people are going to love it.

“Everyone who comes in says that they are going to order the same thing they did back in the day, and when they eat the food, they’re like ‘it reminds us of a younger age of when we used to eat it 10 or 20 years ago’.”
