An unwavering passion for producing handcrafted, premium wines has led to Marco Lubiana crowned Australia’s Young Gun of Wine 2024.

Now in its 18th year, the Young Gun of Wine Award showcases some of the best young winemaking talent from all states and wine regions.

On Wednesday, Mr Lubiana took home the coveted award, becoming the first Tasmanian winner in the competition’s history.

“It was almost overwhelming,” he said.

“There’s quite a large pool of talented winemakers in Australia. So to take the top prize, it’s quite special.

“I’ve been trying my best to make the best possible wines for the last seven years, so it’s really nice to see that recognition.”

After finishing his studies in winemaking in 2018, Mr Lubiana returned to Tasmania and launched his eponymous label with a vintage chardonnay and pinot noir.

If Mr Lubiana’s name rings a bell, don’t be surprised. The Lubiana name is a justly famous one in Tasmanian wine, with Marco Lubiana’s father, Stefano, an industry leader since the ‘90s.

Mr Lubiana’s family’s love affair with winemaking stretches back even further. His grandfather grew and made wine in South Australia, and at least three generations of his family did the same in Italy.

A seventh-generation winemaker, Mr Lubiana said following in his family’s footsteps felt natural.

“While it’s quite a nice thing to be able to keep in the family, you also have got to love what you’re doing,” he said.

“I really fell in love with winemaking when I was in Adelaide studying for my degree in viticulture, and I had the chance to eat and drink a lot of diverse foods and wines.

“I particularly love pinot noir and chardonnay. You can have them with so many different foods. And they just, they get better with age as well.”
