New eatery Leoht is opening along Battery Point’s Hampden Road

Along Battery Point’s picturesque Hampden Road is a new ‘elevated dining space’, one which might just have the recipe to success. Take a look inside.

One of the minds behind a successful Launceston wine bar will soon open her “passion project”, a new light-filled eatery along one of Hobart’s most picturesque streets.

Leoht will start serving breakfast and lunch five days a week, from Thursday to Monday.

The owners will later begin a dinner service up to three nights a week.

Co-owner Chanel Parratt said there would be a focus on using locally sourced produce.

“The menu’s quite wholesome and healthy, there’s a lot of wholefoods,” she said.

“Dinner will lean a bit more European.

“It’s probably more elevated than a cafe, it’s more of a day dining space.

“The intention was we’d build this beautiful meeting space for the community to socialise.”

Leoht is located at 46a Hampden Road, which used to be the southern home of popular restaurant Monsoon Thai.

Ms Parratt said she’d searched two years for the perfect location for her “passion project”.

“We’d been looking for so long, I’d been like a bloodhound trying to find the right spot,’ she said.

“It was quite an interesting thing when this space popped up in Battery Point. It felt right, I trusted it was meant for us.

“It was a serendipitous moment.”

Ms Parratt said there was a special meaning to the name.

“In it’s most literal sense it means ‘light’,” Ms Parratt said.

“It’s an old word that would have been in circulation hundreds of years ago.

“The other side of that word, probably more of its true definition of it, we’re all here to work our light.”

Ms Parratt said it was a fitting name, which matched the aesthetic.

“From dawn to dusk, Leoht is flooded with natural light,” she said.

“We’re north facing on Hampden Road, a really sunny spot to sit during the day.

“We’ve got the beautiful terrace at the front, it’s a beautiful Georgian cottage built in 1893 so it’s great to lean into that history of Battery Point.”

Ms Parratt is the former co-owner of popular Launceston wine bar, Havilah, which she started after pivoting from Tourism Tasmania to hospitality.

She hoped her new venture would have the same level of success.

“I feel like this one is the big dream for me,” she said.

“Havilah was like the apprenticeship, it was a really enjoyable project, its great to see how well it continues to do.

“I hope it follows the same success and formula down here.”

Leoht will be open from 7:30am on Saturday.
