Former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann is back in court, this time in Tasmania, where he is alleged to have stolen a car from the Huon Valley.

Mr Lehrmann, 30, has been charged with one count of motor vehicle stealing.

Mr Lehrmann and his lawyer Zali Burrows appeared by phone before Magistrate Reg Marron in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday.

Court documents reveal the charge was brought by complainant Gail Denise Oates in relation to a silver Toyota Prado allegedly taken on November 20 last year at a Mountain River property in the Huon Valley.

Mr Lehrmann did not enter a plea.

He was bailed to appear before court on June 19.

Lehrmann has been living in Tasmania since his defamation trial in Sydney’s Federal Court collapsed last year.

He had launched defamation proceedings against Channel 10 and TV host Lisa Wilkinson over an episode of The Project in 2021, during which Brittany Higgins alleged he raped her in Parliament House two year prior.

Lehrmann has always denied the allegation, but last year Federal Court Justice Michael Lee found, on a balance of probabilities, that he had likely raped Ms Higgins.

His appeal, also led by Ms Burrows, will be heard in Sydney’s Federal Court later this year.
