Scooter rider hits pedestrian

SHOCKING CCTV footage has captured the moment an e-scooter rider ran into an elderly lady as she was exiting a coffee shop.

The young man was riding down the narrow footpath on a Beam e-scooter about noon on Saturday just as the woman stepped out of the doorway of Brew cafe on Sandy Bay Rd.

The rider collided with the woman, sending her sprawling, and while she was “deeply shocked”, she was not reported to have any serious injuries.

Several customers and baristas rushed to help the lady, who was taken back to her home in a car.

Brew cafe owner Richard Scarr said he was mortified by what had happened.

Mr Scarr said he was shocked e-scooters were allowed to drive at full speed outside his cafe, which is in a busy and often-crowded area full of doorways.

“It’s terrible. I’m just grateful that the lady wasn’t seriously injured. She was in her 80s, so she could’ve been in a whole world of trouble,” Mr Scarr said.

“I’m not against the e-scooters, not at all, but I think that surely there needs to be better controls put on them so they can only do 10km/h in built-up areas.”

Under the new e-scooter laws, users are required to be over 16, wear a helmet and are restricted to a speed of 15km/h on footpaths and 25km/h on shared paths, bicycle paths and local roads.

A Beam spokesperson said they were working to identify the rider of the e-scooter and the elderly woman.

“Beam is aware of the incident that occurred earlier today, and have commenced our investigative process, including analysing trip data, reaching out to the rider and identifying all persons involved to offer assistance,” the spokesperson said.

“Should an incident occur, we offer personal accident insurance cover and third party insurance cover for peace of mind. In all incidents, we work closely with our riders and community members to support them, and we encourage anyone who witnesses or is involved in an accident involving Beam to reach out directly to us.”
