Spotify reveals the top music picks for Melbourne suburbs

MELBURNIANS have some eclectic musical tastes if this Spotify data is anything to go by, with one suburb having no actual music in their Top 5. Find out the #1 song in your suburb here.

From Phonographs to Spotify: A Brief History of the Music Industry

MELBURNIANS are streaming Drake and 5 Seconds of Summer by day and white noise and rainstorms by night.

Using data supplied by streaming service Spotify, the Sunday Herald Sun has identified the most popular songs — and sounds — enjoyed by subscribers in 32 different suburbs.

Canadian chart topper Drake’s hit God’s Plan featured in the Top 5 most streamed songs in 28 of the 32 suburbs profiled, including Brighton, St Kilda, Toorak, Bundoora, Richmond, Healesville and Fitzroy.

Sydney band 5 Seconds of Summer’s No. 1 Youngblood was the most-streamed song in South Yarra, Collingwood, Eltham, Northcote, Essendon, Brunswick and Box Hill.

Hip hop, R & B and rap dominate Melbourne’s streaming habits, with Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, Khalid and late rapper XXXTENTACION popular in most suburbs surveyed.

However there are a few anomalies. Broadmeadows’ most-streamed song is novelty rap song Down with the Pew by FUNnel Vision — an American family who post You Tube videos including music tracks, this one featuring kiddie raps about nerf guns.

Also big in Broadie and Pascoe Vale is Baby Shusher — white noise designed to be played on loop to help kids sleep that sounds like the static of a detuned radio but insulates them from any external noise that may wake them.

South Melbourne are also down with looping white noise — but at a frequency of 228HZ courtesy Granular, designed for falling asleep to — beating out Drake and Khalid.

Watsonia are all about Granular’s multi-frequency white noise, with no actual music in their Top 5 most streamed tracks, just varieties of white noise and rain sounds.

Springvale’s most streamed is Erik Eriksson’s more mellow Soothing White Noise, designed to fade into the background but just take the edge off.

In Ringwood North David Galtszyk’s piano instrumental Willow Song is the most streamed track — it appears on many popular lullaby and sleep playlists.

Frankston’s top of the pops is Sleep and Chill Rain, for those who like to sleep with the sound of nature.

Dr Amanda E Krause, Psychologist and Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne, says our music consumption is motivated by certain goals.

“One of the biggest reasons people listen to music is to regulate their emotions or moods or arousal level. In the case of falling to sleep, there’s a clear goal with regard to our listening — and this goal is linked to our level of arousal.

“People selecting music for a sleep playlist will look for slower tempo songs. Specifically, we’d be trying to calm ourselves, to relax ourselves, maybe even quiet our minds from the day in order to fall to sleep. “

It’s not just Top 40 music and white noise being streamed. Brunswick have a mellow take on Brahms’ Lullaby sitting between 5SOS and Post Malone and just out of the Top 5 in Sunbury is I’m Not That Girl from the Wicked soundtrack.
