Victoria’s most popular university courses revealed, as offers are released

THOUSANDS of Victorian students will find out if they have been accepted into their preferred university course.

Years of hard work have paid off for more than 52,000 people who will this afternoon be offered an undergraduate position.

Monash University received the most offers for the third consecutive year (15,316 applications), followed by RMIT University (12,621) and the University of Melbourne (11,600).

However most students will take up study with RMIT University which has offered positions to 10,660 applicants — about 400 more than Monash University.

The most popular course was Arts and Science at the University of Melbourne, which received 2529 and 2312 first preference applications, respectively.

Medicine at Monash University was also popular, with 1576 school leavers marking it as their top preference.

University of Melbourne also received high interest in its commerce (1493 applications) and biomedicine (910 applications) courses.

The most popular course offered by La Trobe was applied science/physiotherapy practice (649 applications).

Nursing was the most sought-after course at Australian Catholic University and Deakin which each received 585 and 455 first preference applications.

Three in four people who applied for tertiary study have been offered a place, according to Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre data.

Over 8000 students have already received early offers, including international students.

The total number of undergraduate applications from Victorian students has dropped about 3.4 per cent with just under 70, 000 applications received.

But the data shows a slight surge in the number of local Year 12 students who have applied to further their studies.

Over 50, 000 VCE students put their hat in the ring for a tertiary position, up 0.5 per cent on last year.

The average student ATAR for 2018 was 69.53.

The Victorian government this year introduced a new minimum ATAR standard of 65 for all education courses.
