SCHOOL’s out for more than 50,000 students who are celebrating the end of VCE today and more than a decade of learning.

As the clock struck 5.15pm in exam rooms across the state, the seven-week long VCE slog finally came to an end with Chinese and Italian written exams.

A total 51,845 students are eligible to finish VCE this year — and farewell school forever — while 85,108 students sat at least one VCE exam.

Earlier today, students completed Indonesian and Japanese exams, among them Williamstown High School’s Dimity Leontos.

“Maybe half way through the exam I looked at the clock and thought, ‘There’s only an hour left then I’ve finished 13 years of school’,” she said.

“I’m so happy.”

The 17-year-old was the last of her friends to finish exams.

But the others didn’t party without her.

“They decided to hold off celebrating until I finished,” she said.

And how would she celebrate the end of 13 years of school?

“To be honest, I’m probably going to go home and sleep,” she laughed.

“Straight home to bed and to see the family.”

With Williamstown High’s school formal on Friday night and Schoolies in a few weeks, there was plenty of time to celebrate.

“We’re going to Sandy Point to a friend’s beach house — it’s going to be a week-long slumber party,” Dimity said.

Minister for Education James Merlino said all VCE students that completed exams should be “very proud of their achievement”.

“I would also like to thank all the teachers, school principals, parents and family members who have supported students throughout their studies,” he said.
