New details have emerged about the slain father, Aaron Stahlhut, who was killed in North Adelaide on Sunday morning.

His alleged murderer, 20-year-old Rylie Lewis Everson-Clare, will remain in remand until his mental health is assessed.

A former colleague who spoke to The Advertiser on the condition of anonymity confirmed further details about Mr Stahlhut, describing him as a resilient man who survived a near-death experience.

She said Mr Stahlhut had “come back from the brink of death” following a kidney transplant in 2022.

This was preceded by about 18 months of dialysis and serious illness, according to the colleague.

“This is where he shone through how he is as a person,” she told The Advertiser.

“He overcame every challenge.”

The colleague suggested this experience is what led Mr Stahlhut to exercise regularly through his long walks — the activity he was doing when he met his eventual death.

The Advertiser also understands Mr Stahlhut is a former defence force member, with the colleague and social media posts confirming he served at Woodside Barracks with the 16th Air Defence Regiment (now known as 16th Regiment RAA).

“Served with him at 16AD, one of the nicest blokes you could ever meet,” a social media user wrote on learning of Mr Stahlhut’s death.

It is also understood it is during his time at Woodside that Mr Stahlhut met his daughter’s mother.

A woman who described Mr Stahlhut as her “best friend” while laying flowers at the scene of the killing on Sunday said Mr Stahlhut adored his daughter.

“(His daughter) was the apple of his eyes,” she said.

In his work, Mr Stahlhut was a senior manager in the public service, having worked at the Department of Health from 2014 to 2016 and with the Department of the Premier and Cabinet from 2016 to 2017, according to his LinkedIn.

Mr Stahlhut’s most recent employment was with Hewlett Packard Enterprise since 2017.
