Quick-thinking neighbours have alerted a mother with a newborn baby to a fire erupting in a property behind her northern suburbs home, which took a large fleet of firefighters to contain on Wednesday.

Inside the home, a man and his dog were able to evacuate safely before MFS crews arrived.

The resident of the second property at the front of the block, Monika was unaware that a fire had started behind her home, but was safely evacuated with her new born baby after neighbours knocked on her door.

Speaking to 7News outside the home, Monika said she did not know where the smoke was coming from.

“It was really scary. When I called my husband I was crying like, I think because, from inside, I didn’t understand what it is (was) because it was all black,” she said.

“I thought it was our house.”
