SAPOL officer injured on duty after driver attempts to avoid arrest at Tailem Bend

A police officer has been rushed to hospital after a driver collided into them following a pursuit in Tailem Bend.

A man aged in his 30s has been charged after he led police on a pursuit which led to an officer being injured - adding to the second incident where an officer has been injured on duty.

Earlier today, a Mitsubishi with no front bumper, a smashed windscreen and no registration plates was seen allegedly driving erratically near Padthaway, around 10.30am on Tuesday, December 24.

At the time, police were unable to locate the car, but then just after 6pm, PolAir spotted the same vehicle leaving Meningie, heading towards Tailem Bend.

The car pulled into a service station in Tailem Bend around 6.30pm, but as police tried to spike the car’s tyres and the car collided with the police officer.

The officer sustained leg injuries and was rushed to the hospital in a stable condition.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, continued to drive south on the Princes Hwy, before he dumped the car on Golf Course Rd and sprinted into the scrub.

STAR Group officers and police officers found the man and negotiated with the 30-year-old man before he was arrested around 8pm.

Police also searched the man’s car where they allegedly found two firearms.

He was charged with several offences including injuries to a police officer, and was refused bail until he appears in court.

It comes after, a man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking a female police officer with a sword while she was responding to an domestic violence incident at Port Augusta on Saturday.

“Police treat any matter when a police officer is injured extremely seriously and will be examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that the alleged offender is dealt with appropriately before the courts,” SA Police said in a statement.

Police are also urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 33 000.
