A man in his 30s has been charged after leading police on a pursuit which resulted in an officer being struck by a car – the second cop injured on duty in a matter of days.

Police allege that the man was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi with no front bumper, a smashed windscreen and no registration plates that was driving erratically at Padthaway around 10.30am on December 24.

The same vehicle was then spotted by the PolAir helicopter leaving Meningie just after 6pm, headed toward Tailem Bend.

Police attempted to spike the car’s tyres at a service station in the town about 6.30pm – but allege that the vehicle then veered into an officer.

The officer sustained leg injuries and was rushed to the hospital in a stable condition.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, continued to drive south on the Princes Hwy, before he dumped the car on Golf Course Rd and sprinted into the scrub.

STAR Group officers and police officers located and arrested the 30-year-old man about 8pm.

Police also searched the man’s car, where they allegedly found two firearms.

He was charged with several offences, including injuries to a police officer, and was refused bail until he appears in court.

It comes after a man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking a female police officer with a sword while she was responding to an domestic violence incident at Port Augusta on Saturday.

“Police treat any matter when a police officer is injured extremely seriously and will be examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that the alleged offender is dealt with appropriately before the courts,” SA Police said in a statement.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 33 000.
