Farmer Thomas may well be one of the next success stories of Farmer Wants a Wife, despite having to “fake it”.
If you’ve seen the latest promo for the Seven Network series, you will know the South Australian farmer says “I love you” to one of the single ladies.
That is a pretty good result, considering the 35-year-old, from Kimba on the Eyre Peninsula, went on the dating show to “fast track” his search for the one.
Talking to The Advertiser in the lead up to Easter Monday’s season premiere, Farmer Thomas said he was of a “what have I got to lose” mindset when he signed up.
For starters, he was over dating apps.
“You would go for a beer and (find out) they don’t want to move to the farm,” he said, adding: “If any girl comes to the country they are snapped up straight away.”
The wheat, barley and lentil grower said it was also tough to find a girl from the city who understood what it was like to run a farm during a drought.
“The last couple of years have been extremely dry,” he said.
Talking about his time recording the show – which was about six months ago – Farmer Thomas said it was emotionally taxing.
“Everyone thinks it is a man’s dream to have five ladies in the house but you’re playing with their feelings and emotions,” he said.
Farmer Thomas also said he felt required to “fake it” when not interested in certain single ladies rather than tell them the truth straight away.
But when he did put his heart on the line, and tell one of them “I love you”, it was the real deal.
“It was a bit scary to see if they felt the same way,” he said. “You’re putting yourself out there to be rejected for Australia to see.”
As for whether his feelings were reciprocated, Farmer Thomas simply said: “You will have to tune in.”
Nervous to watch himself on TV and that the show’s editing might create “a lot more drama”, Farmer Thomas is unlikely to be glued to the telly from Easter Monday.
“I might watch it (later) on 7plus,” he said.
Since Farmer Wants a Wife started in 2007, it has celebrated 11 marriages and the arrival of 27 babies.
