A former Annesley College student has been appointed as the new principal of its reinvigorated junior school.

Jo Rossiter has been on the school’s teaching staff since 2012, most recently as primary years director.

She has been acting as principal since last month following the departure in June of Luke Ritchie, who replaced St Andrew’s School principal Jackie Becher following her resignation over bullying allegations.

Ms Rossiter’s appointment follows a turbulent time for Annesley College, which was on the verge of closure a decade ago.

The former all-girls’ school created a coeducational junior primary school and sold some of its property when declining enrolments and a failed merger with Pulteney Grammar School left it owing money to the Uniting Church.

The school also became embroiled in an unfair dismissal claim by the former head of its boarding house, who sued for $2.25m in damages.

Ms Rossiter was part of a new leadership team which developed a strategic plan for the junior school which since had resulted in continuing growth.

School council chairman Bruce Spangler said Ms Rossiter was chosen from a field of candidates, including interstate and overseas applicants.

“Jo brings a unique perspective and a strong appreciation for the values and history of Annesley to the role of principal,” he said.

“Her collaborative, approachable and conscientious leadership style positions Jo well to lead Annesley as we enter our next strategic phase.”

Mr Spangler said Ms Rossiter was a highly qualified educator and leader.

“Jo gained valuable experience in Canberra, New Zealand and outback South Australia before returning to Adelaide with her family,” he said.

“Since that time, Jo has become an integral part of the Annesley Junior School community.”

Ms Rossiter said it was “an honour” to be given the opportunity to become the junior school’s new principal.

“We have an exceptional team of educators who are providing outstanding, progressive education for our young learners,” she said.

“There is a clear focus on equipping them with the skills they need to find a sense of belonging and create impact in our world.”

Ms Rossiter’s appointment becomes effective early next month.
