Construction underway on new $8m state-of-the-art Gawler ambulance station

Work on a new ambulance station is starting north of Adelaide – to prepare for Gawler’s exploding population.

Construction is underway on a new state-of-the-art ambulance station in Gawler that is set to improve ambulance response coverage across the growing outer northern suburbs areas.

The new $8m station will be situated on a 4500sq m site along Main North Road, Willaston, and will replace the existing Gawler facility on Murray St, which is no longer able to meet the demands of the area.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of next year.

Under the just released Greater Adelaide Regional Plan, more than 100,000 homes, or 36 per cent of Adelaide’s housing target growth to 2051, are earmarked for the north – 22 per cent, or 70,000 homes are in Adelaide’s outer north alone.

The upgraded station will house five ambulances and two light fleet vehicles as well as 24 Gawler-based paramedics, effectively doubling the capacity of the current Murray St station.

This team of paramedics includes the additional 12-paramedic 24/7 emergency ambulance crew that came online in December 2022 and the new six-person Regional Medical Transfer Service, which came online at the end of 2023.

This expanded capacity of the new station will play a key role in meeting the growing demand for ambulance services in the region.

SAAS Chief Executive Officer Rob Elliott said the facility’s new location on Main North Road will help emergency responses across the northern and surrounding regions by granting ambulance crews with improved access to major roads and highways.

Light MP Tony Piccolo said the new station was designed to meet the needs of Gawler’s growing community.

Construction, which is being carried out by Cook Build, will see about 20 workers on-site daily, with the concrete pour scheduled for November this year and the site to be open for operation at the end of 2025.

Health Minister Chris Picton said the beginning of construction marks an exciting milestone for Gawler locals, who have long been calling for increased ambulance services and better infrastructure.
