A CFS volunteer and alleged killer driver has bobbed, ducked and wove around his lawyer while leaving court in a bizarre effort to avoid attention.

Wayne Klingberg used lawyer Ben Thilthorpe as a human shield outside the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday in a farcical attempt to avoid an Advertiser photographer.

When he noticed he was also being photographed, from Mr Thilthorpe’s left, by a journalist, he stood up straight and continued walking – bumping into the photographer as he passed.

Mr Klingberg, 56, of Freeling, has yet to plead to both aggravated causing death by dangerous driving and the lesser, alternative charge of aggravated driving without due care.

The charges arose from a rollover on Owen Rd, Hamley Bridge, in July 2022 – a Stockport man, 62, died at the scene.

Previously, prosecutors alleged Mr Klingberg was driving the car at the time of the rollover, and that dashcam footage and airbag data was being collated.

Mr Klingberg was scheduled to enter pleas to the charges on Thursday, however Mr Thilthorpe asked the case be postponed.

“This is a joint application by both prosecution and defence for a short adjournment,” he said.

“Negotiations are ongoing, and there is a real prospect this matter might resolve in this jurisdiction.”

Under state law, death by dangerous driving cases are sentenced in the District Court while aggravated driving without due care cases remain in the Magistrates Court.

The penalty for the lesser offence is 12 months jail – a 93 per cent reduction on death by dangerous driving’s maximum 15-year prison term.

Magistrate Karim Soetratma granted the adjournment and ordered Mr Klingberg answer the charges next month.
