A 31-year-old man who died in a horrific crash in Adelaide this week had just recovered from leukaemia and was enjoying the “most beautiful time of his life”, according to a close friend.

Dominic Meehan died when the car he was driving struck a tree on Main North Rd on Wednesday.

His shock death has rocked the SA concert band community with Mr Meehan recognised nationally as a talented brass musician.

South Australian Band Association president Bruce Raymond said he was stunned to learn of the loss of “a beautiful person” and a “very special talent”.

Mr Raymond said he played alongside Mr Meehan in what would become his final concert in front of a full house at the Unley Town Hall just days before his death.

“I did his final night with him on Saturday night and it was an amazing concert and then all of a sudden he is gone,” he said.

“This has rocked our band community, it’s a big loss to SA … we are just stunned – he just recovered from leukaemia, he’s battled that and he had been cleared.

“I had coffee with him before Christmas and he was cleared (of his illness) in early November after four or five years with chemo and everything all of a sudden he was released and all good.

“He’s been very happy and all good and all of a sudden something happened.

“He was 31 – in the most beautiful time of his life and just coming out of (illness) and he’s been wonderful.

“He was such a beautiful person, a gentle giant great, great guy he was.”

The Unley Concert Band took to social media to pay tribute to their “friend and valued saxophone player.”

The post described Mr Meehan as an “all round good guy, willing to assist with just about anything that needed doing, and a kind and giving friend”.

“Dom represented our band as a soloist multiple times at a national level, winning the highest honour with his beautiful expressive playing,” the post said.

“Despite health concerns over the past few years, Dom was continually generous with his skills and time in our band and many other bands and ensembles in South Australia, plus instilling a love of music in the next generation of band musicians.

“We are all devastated at this news and ask for our band supporters to keep Dominic’s family, friends and SA’s wider band community in their thoughts.

“The world is a little less bright today … we will greatly miss him.”

Mr Meehan’s life was the 14th lost on SA roads this year, coming just hours before a second tragedy at Golden Grove brought the road toll to 15.
