'Australia's greatest detective' back in the spotlight

FORMER homicide detective Ron Iddles has been cleared of any wrongdoing after a complaint was dismissed over his conduct during his review of the Silk-Miller police murders.

On Thursday, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton confirmed Mr Iddles, Victoria’s community safety trustee, would not face action after a probe into whether he provided information to other parties about the case without authorisation.

A complaint was lodged about his conduct after his key findings were made public by the Herald Sun last year.

It is understood the complaint was made by a high-ranking officer involved with Taskforce Lorimer — which investigated the murders of officers Gary Silk and Rodney Miller, who were shot in Moorabbin while on a stake-out in August, 1998.

Investigators from Professional Standards Command investigated whether Mr Iddles breached police regulations by making unauthorised disclosures to three parties.

The parties were the Director of Public Prosecutions, a solicitor and the Herald Sun.

None of the allegations were upheld.

Mr Iddles said he acted without “fear of favour” after taking on the case with the knowledge of superior officers.

He said he had expected to be cleared of any wrongdoing. “I have been officially informed I have been cleared of any wrongdoing,” he said.

“I was confident that that would always be the case.

“I think we need to take a deep breath and see what happens with this case.

“I never asked to do the review in the first place but when I undertook it I did it without fear or favour.

“When I made my final report that on the basis of probability Jason Roberts was not there (at the Silk-Miller shootings) I knew I was standing against most members of Victoria Police.”

Roberts, convicted with co-accused Bandali Debs of shooting the officers, has always protested his innocence.

He has claimed Debs shot the officers alone.
