Central Queensland tennis star Lachlan Vickery is recovering in hospital after being injured in an alleged hit-and-run in Victoria.
The 18-year-old was allegedly struck by a car in a Wodonga car park just before 1am Saturday.
He was taken to Albury Wodonga Health hospital with serious leg injuries, but in a stable condition, according to a News Corp report.
Lachlan had on Friday played in the final of the main singles draw at the Victorian Junior Grass Court Championship in Wodonga.
Lachlan’s father Glenn is manager and head coach at the Rockhampton Regional Tennis Centre on Lion Creek Road.
A post on the centre’s Facebook page on Sunday advised it would be closed this week due to an “unforeseen family emergency”.
Glenn posted again on Monday, saying it was “extremely lucky for our son and coach Lachy to be alive”.
“Early Saturday morning he was involved in a hit-and-run accident,” the post continued.
“He now has to have quite a few surgeries to fix his injuries.
“Kim will be staying with him and I will be returning to the centre on Friday.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused but we needed to be together as a family.”
A Victorian Police media spokesperson said Wodonga Crime Investigation Unit detectives had charged a 36-year-old man in relation to the incident.
“It’s alleged a car struck an 18-year-old man in a Dalgleish Street car park before fleeing about 12.45am,” the spokesperson said.
“The Wodonga man was charged with assault and traffic related offences. He has been bailed to appear in Wodonga Magistrates Court on January 19.”
