IT’S not just Halloween that Aussies have adopted from the US, with a record number of shoppers and retailers set to cash in on the traditional Black Friday sales following Thanksgiving.

While the international shopping extravaganza hasn’t hit the frenetic levels of America, more local retailers are getting on board and offering more discounts and deals.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN NOVEMBER

CHADSTONE BEFORE IT WAS A SHOPPING CENTRE

Chadstone shopping centre is featuring Black Friday deals for the first time this year, with 25 per cent of stores offering specials.

General manager Fiona Mackenzie said foot traffic had already grown 4 per cent for November and the centre was expecting a bumper weekend on the back of the offers.

“Continuing the early Christmas shopping trend, 25 per cent of Chadstone stores will for the first time offer Black Friday sales this Friday, in a nod to the American Thanksgiving-Black Friday.

Having not promoted Black Friday sales at all in 2016, 12 months later, there will be more than 70 offers at Chadstone retailers,” she said.

Country Road Group chief executive Scott Fyfe said brands including Country Road, Mimco and Witchery would also be discounting across the weekend to tie in with what has become a global shopping weekend.

Both Myer and David Jones are expecting record crowds in store and online.

Myer executive general manager of stores Tony Sutton said the Super Cyber Weekend had run for the past two years.

“Aligning our Super Cyber Weekend with these international sales events ensures we remain competitive,” he said.

Geelong-based global brand Cotton On Group was an early adopter of Black Friday, first in its US stores in 2009 and more recently in Australia, chief financial officer Michael Hardwick said.

“As the kick-off to the festive season, Black Friday has continued to build momentum over the last few years in Australia and other global markets and we look forward to providing our customers in these regions with incredible offers for the fourth year in a row,” he said.

Amazon Australia’s rumoured soft launch at 2pm today is also fuelling the shopping frenzy. According to IBISWorld senior industry analyst Kim Do, Amazon’s imminent arrival into Australia is set to shake up the retail sector this weekend and beyond.
