Qld weather: 10 degree backflip after 40C-plus heatwave

The southeast is set to experience a 10-degree backflip in temperatures after five days of brutal heat, but it won’t last long, the Bureau of Meteorology warns, with the mercury set to climb again at the weekend.

Unprecedented heat sweeps across Queensland

The southeast is tipped to feel a 10 degree backflip this week as a cold front sweeps the state, giving Queenslanders a much-needed reprieve after a record-breaking heatwave.

While Monday is still set to boast temperatures in the low 30s – six to eight degrees above average – by Tuesday much of the southeast will see a return of the cooler days and nights.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Helen Reid said the cool change is being driven from the south, where other states such as Victoria are being battered by severe weather.

“Queensland won’t be getting the sense of big weather like down south, but there will be a noticeable change in temperatures,” Ms Reid said.

“It will also be windy on the coastal waters, with the south east likely to notice it during the course of early Tuesday morning and gradually work it’s way further north.”

Brisbane is set to drop from a maximum of 33C on Monday to 24C on Tuesday and 22C on Wednesday, with minimums expected to linger around 11C and 12C.

It will be a similar story for the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay.

“The eastern seaboard will be several degrees below average on Wednesday – this front is a big one so the cooler air is set to stretch all the way to the [Cape York] peninsula, bringing cooler weather to Townsville and Cairns as well,” Ms Reid said.

However, the cool reprieve is not set to last long, with a warmer weekend on the cards once again for the southeast.

“We’ll see that significant change and relief in temperatures, but by the weekend we will see warmer temperatures return,” Ms Reid said.

Those temperatures won’t be as extreme as last week’s however, with tops reaching just a few degrees above average.

Ms Reid said Queenslanders would should expect to see more of the hot and cool patterns throughout Spring.
