Man dies at popular Qld tourist diving site Wolf Rock, near Rainbow Beach

Police are searching for missing diving gear which may wash up at two tourist beaches after a Gold Coast man’s death while on a charter at a popular spot off the Queensland coast.

Tragedy has struck with a man dying while diving at a popular Qld tourist spot near Rainbow Beach.

Police are appealing to the public to keep an eye out for scuba equipment, as they investigate the sudden death of a man in waters off Double Island Point.

A 54-year-old Gold Coast man died while on a commercial dive charter at the Wolf Rock dive site just after 11am last Friday.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

According to Queensland police, the man’s dive equipment, including a black buoyancy control vest and white air tank, was left in the water at the site.

“Police believe the currents may push the items north and they could possibly wash up on the northern area of Inskip Point or on an eastern beach on K’Gari,” the statement read.

“If anyone locates these items on the beach, please leave them alone and contact police.

“If they are found in the water, the public is being urged to retrieve them, and inform police.
A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said on Saturday the man had died due to a “completely unrelated medical reason”.

Police said the tragedy happened about 2km off the coast of Double Island Point and 10km east of the tourist town.

Wolf Rock is a popular location for tourism dives, known particularly for its opportunity to let divers get up close with sharks that frequent the area.
