Prime Minister Scott Morrison has personally endorsed a Queensland bid to host the 2032 Olympics, telling International Olympic Committee boss Thomas Bach it could be better than Sydney’s effort in 2000.
At a meeting after the Osaka G20 summit, the PM assured the Olympics chief his government would support a bid from southeast Queensland “every step of the way”.
The foreshadowed bid, which would be centred on Brisbane, comes after the IOC-approved changes to electing future Games hosts, allowing regions and countries to bid.
In the past only individual cities could apply.
“The Sydney Olympics set a new standard for the Olympic Games and the IOC still praises its success almost 20 years later,” Mr Morrison told the Herald Sun.
“I have no doubt that Queenslanders, in true Origin spirit, would want to go one better in Brisbane in 2032 and show the world ‘How good is Queensland’!”

The federal government has committed up to $10 million for a partnership between all levels of government to prepare a southeast Queensland bid for 2032.
Mr Bach, visiting Japan ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Games, told Mr Morrison the Sydney Olympics was still “top rated” around the world and people had “good memories” of the event 19 years ago.
