Paul Carter’s new life in modest townhouse in upstate New York

When the Herald Sun caught up with lying love rat Paul Carter at his modest townhouse in a sprawling, middle-class suburb in upstate New York he didn’t mince his words.

Paul Carter may be accused of fleecing millions of dollars from his victims, but you wouldn’t know it looking at his home.

The former Melbourne tradie shares a modest townhouse with his new fiancée, an American lawyer who represented him in a child support court hearing during his divorce with former wife Brooklin Carter.

The pair drive matching black and white Mercedes sedans, notably more up-market than most of the other vehicles in the sprawling, middle-class townhouse development where they live in a suburb of New York’s state capital, Albany.

The Herald Sun visited the home to question Carter about the distraught ex-wives and former fiancee, businesses and individuals who say they were conned by him.

Defiant, he confidently denied taking anyone’s money, dismissing allegations against him as calculated revenge by disgruntled ex-partners.

“That’s bulls**t! I didn’t take anyone’s money,” Carter said.

His new fiancee Kelly Sayers, stood by her man, saying the other women were targeting Carter because he had moved on from them.

“This is crazy,” said Ms Sayers, who lectures in business law at the nearby Hudson Valley Community College.

“This is more than embittered exes…this is disordered people that are feeding on each other.

“I am now a lover of his and this has fired the two of them up.”

Currently working in construction and “self employed”, Carter said he had not been approached by authorities in Australia or the US about his alleged scams or the rape complaint in Melbourne.

“I mean if there are any allegations of fraud, why wasn’t I notified?” he said.

Carter lives a 20-minute drive from the sprawling equestrian property called Thunder Down Under, which he bought with Brooklin last year, before the pair finally severed ties.

He has lived in the ground floor condominium since last June and pays less than AUD$2400 a month in rent.

A neighbour yesterday described the couple as “quiet people”.

A building manager said residents at the complex, which includes a pool and fitness centre, were “mainly professional people, a few families”.

Carter said ex-fiancee Katherine De Bois was “broke” when he met her and he had tried to help her out of debt.

“In actual fact she owed her ex-boyfriend about $60k and I was trying to get me to settle that debt for her as well.”

Katherine has since rubbished those claims.

But Ms Sayers said she believed in Carter.

“It’s interesting because his resume is actually quite extensive and he’s had his resume checked for jobs and they come back amazingly pristine,” she said.

“And by the way when you’ve been in business for 30 years doing many different jobs, there’s going to be people who may or may not be happy with the outcome and have to find a reason to justify losses.

“I was however surprised at the level of allegations that frankly what they said about Paul. Being a lawyer, I said well why haven’t the state police, why hasn’t he been deported? You know, these (are) silly things.

“It’s been a long year to tell you the truth.”
