Latest Footy Show antics: What is wrong with Sam Newman?

SAM Newman has finally totally lost it. The fact he threw a tantrum and wouldn’t even put on his usual display of sarcasm, outrage and nastiness for an hour or so speaks volumes, writes Susie O’Brien.

Sam Newman gives the finger on the Footy Show

SAM Newman has finally totally lost it.

Last night he offered more proof that he’s little more than a geriatric man baby, putting on a tantrum because The Footy Show ’s producers told him to stop offending people.

On the show Newman couldn’t even be bothered to offer up his trademark brand of abuse, vilification and harassment.

Instead, he gave the dwindling group of viewers who tune in to watch absolutely nothing.

Zero, zip, nada.

He even flipped the bird at one stage — showing exactly what he thinks of the show’s audience.

Not happy, Sam.

The fact that Newman wouldn’t even put on his usual display of sarcasm, outrage and nastiness for an hour or so speaks volumes.

Newman has lost it.

As far as I am concerned, I am happy if Newman is boring and mute.

At least he’s not offending women, journalists and transgender people and everyone else.

The clear suggestion was that Newman was “in the sh*ts big time” — as one Twitter user put it — because producers had asked him to be less controversial.

Co-host Craig Hutchison is right that this is just “Sam being Sam”.

“We’re in it together,” he said.

But it’s clear that Newman has never been in it for anyone but himself.

Not only did he barely speak, he refused to answer questions and left before the end of the show.

His petulant display at a time when his show is struggling in the ratings against Channel 7’s rival show The Front Bar shows how much he thinks of himself and how little he thinks of the show and his co-stars — and the audience.

Although I’ve had a longstanding feud with Newman, I do acknowledge that he’s seen as a legend among the show’s rusted-on middle-aged male audience in particular.

He remains an important part of the show, I am sorry to say, and last night’s display doesn’t bode well for the future.

It certainly seemed that Newman’s co-stars were heartily sick of his antics by the end of the show.

At one point Dave Hughes — who manages to be funny without offending people — noted that Sam could “cheer up for the last 15 minutes of the show”.

If Newman keeps this up, there won’t be a show for much longer.

Which is just fine by me.
