Russell St bomber Craig Minogue’s posturing for parole is repellent

CRAIG “Fatty” Minogue seems to have a misconception that he deserves human rights. But I believe that the moment he helped organise a bomb bound for Russell St police headquarters in 1986 was also the time he lost all right to be treated like the rest of us, writes Katie Bice.

Cop killer Craig Minogue 'will die in jail': Daniel Andrews

CRAIG “Fatty” Minogue seems to have a misconception that he deserves human rights.

But I believe that the moment he helped organise a bomb bound for Russell St police headquarters in 1986 was also the time he lost all right to be treated like the rest of us.

Last week he was back in court — again — wasting our time with a bid to thwart laws specifically put in place to ensure he can’t leave jail.

Minogue claims it’s “cruel, degrading and inhumane” to keep him locked up with no chance of parole — which is ironic since he’s the living personification of all three of those things.

To make matters worse, Minogue then organised a victory phone message to be tweeted.

“The power of parliament to make laws should be used responsibly and as part of a carefully calculated response or social problem and not as part of some cynical political advertising,” he said.

What Minogue fails to comprehend is that the rest of the community sees this law as exactly that — a responsible response to his possible release. You’d be hard pressed to find a more universally supported government initiative.

The state government will amend the law to keep Minogue caged and it’s inevitable he will fight it again.

But he should know the community has no tolerance for his games and even if it takes three, four, five sets of changes to legislation to make sure he dies in jail, it will be widely supported.

What makes Minogue’s whining even more galling is the thorough decency and dignity of the parents of his victim, young police constable Angela Taylor.

Their only response to the killer’s latest court posturing was to say that they chose only to remember their daughter.

It’s clear Minogue is frustrated by being left in jail and is filling in his time by feeling sorry for himself. But all this proves is that more than 30 years behind bars hasn’t helped him achieve any insight into his behaviour.

He clearly either doesn’t care or understand that we have no interest in hearing from him.

That he surrendered his “rights” in 1986 and no length of punishment we can mete out to him in this life will be enough for what he did.

If it makes Minogue feel any better, the only regret of average Victorians is that more evil people like him aren’t receiving big sentences that would allow them to keep him company until he is finally released through the prison gates — in a pine box.
