THE State Government spent more than $20,000 on external legal fees fighting police killer Craig Minogue’s bid to apply for parole.

The government revealed yesterday it was billed $20,400 in external legal fees for its failed High Court case.

The court ruled on Wednesday that laws created in 2016 to keep cop killers in jail did not apply to Minogue because the offence was indiscriminate and no one in particular was targeted.

Minogue set off a bomb outside the Russell St Police Headquarters in 1986 that killed 21-year-old Constable Angela Taylor and injured 22 others.

After the High Court’s shock decision, the government immediately promised law changes and that Minogue would “die in jail”.

A government spokeswoman yesterday said the legal costs incurred were consisted with the practices of previous governments.

“We have been clear that we will do what it takes to make sure this killer is never released from prison,” she said.

It comes as Minogue released another "podcast” from behind bars, slamming an Opposition promise to slap prisoners whose calls are recorded and broadcasts with a phone ban.

He said his “preference” was to win parole and “go about the rest of my life out of the public and political eye”.
