Andrew Bolt: How did so many Australians become mewling, sanctimonious, self-pitying, vicious hypocrites?

An initial ban on police marching in the Mardi Gras after the alleged murder of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies by officer Beau Lamarre-Condon smacked of identity politics and hypocrisy.

‘Massive overreaction?’: Mardi Gras board request police not take part in parade

The initial ban on police marching in this weekend’s Sydney Mardi Gras said a lot about what Australians have become. None of it is good.

Late on Wednesday, a compromise deal was struck but even then officers would not be allowed to attend in uniform.

But the original ban makes me wonder — how did so many Australians become such mewling, sanctimonious, self-pitying and vicious hypocrites?

The board of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras told NSW Police this week they couldn’t have their usual gaggle of gay, lesbian and trans officers march because one gay officer, Beau Lamarre-Condon, had allegedly murdered his former partner, Jesse Baird, and Baird’s new lover, Luke Davies.

Never mind that police claim the alleged murders were a “crime of passion” and not
“gay-hate related”.

The board still claimed that letting police march in the parade made some gays and lesbians worry the event might not be a safe place “to protest, celebrate, and advocate for equality”.

Did I mention the people behind this ban also appear to be morons, lost in the wilds of identity politics?

Consider all the dumb ways you could play this identity politics game, using Lamarre-Condon as your prop.

A policeman allegedly killed Baird and Davis, so ban all police from the Gay Mardi Gras.

A gay allegedly killed Baird and Davis, so ban all gays from the Gay Mardi Gras.

A man allegedly killed Baird and Davis, so ban all men from the Gay Mardi Gras.

A child of a broken home allegedly killed Baird and Davis, so ban all children of divorcees from the Gay Mardi Gras.

The possibilities are endless, so why seize on Lamarre-Condon’s job as his most relevant attribute, and ban everyone who’s doing the same work?

That seems born of bias and politics — and our toxic new tribalism, that turns individuals into a pack of whinging victims.

That’s how an alleged “crime of passion” by an alleged ex-lover becomes not just the sin of a jealous individual, but a stain on everyone of his alleged tribe.

If only we had leaders with the courage to stand against this intolerance.

Don’t count on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who said the ban was just “a matter for the police and Mardi Gras”.

The Sydney Morning Herald even praised this unjust ban as “sensible and sensitive”, despite admitting Mardi Gras organisers were taking us “one step back” by punishing police for “the alleged sins of a colleague”.

Are newspapers really backing this injustice? How could they have forgotten collective guilt went out with the Nazis and Bolsheviks?
