It will take a year before a Hunter Region man accused of killing another with a Razor scooter during a wild street brawl will head to trial.
Kane Flanders, 30, appeared in Sydney’s Supreme Court on Friday and confirmed his plea of not guilty to murdering 38-year-old Ash Morgan at Raymond Terrace on April 9 last year.
A trial date has been set for July 2026 in Newcastle that will run for an estimated four to five weeks.
According to police, Morgan had arrived at a Cambridge Ave home before 2am and began banging on the door while armed with an axe.
Police allege Flanders went to investigate the yelling and commotion in the street, which continued for several minutes before a brawl broke out on the road.
Police further allege Flanders then struck down Morgan several times with a Razor-branded scooter.
Emergency services found Morgan lying on the roadway with serious head injuries, yet he was unable to be revived and died at the scene.
Flanders was taken to Maitland Hospital and treated for injuries before being taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with the 38-year-old’s murder.
The men were known to each other, police allege.
