A dramatic blaze erupted on Monday morning when a car burst into flames in the middle of a paddock in Sydney’s southwest, quickly spreading to the surrounding grassland.
Rural Fire Rescue NSW firefighters from in Catherine Field and Wallacia raced to the scene on Bringelly Rd, Rossmore, around 5am to find a Jeep SUV consumed by flames in the middle of the field, and rapidly spreading into the long grass.
The crews battled against intense conditions for almost an hour before eventually bringing the fire under control.
RFS spokesman Gregory Allan explained a mechanical fault in the car was the likely cause of the fire. No injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.
“Cars get very hot and so especially if you’re traveling, we advise motorists not to drive and park in long grass, because grass can ignite quite quickly,” Mr Allan said.
An extreme fire danger rating has been declared for the Greater Sydney region, the Greater Hunter, and parts of northern NSW with soaring temperatures and gusty winds increasing the risk for bush fires, a total fire ban is also in place today.
