Workers at a shopping centre jeweller on the Qld-NSW border are “traumatised” after a man allegedly robbed the store with a spray bottle filled with fuel.
Justin Nisbet, 28, has been accused of the bizarre hold up and faced Lismore Local Court on Saturday. He has been charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon.
Emergency services were called to Prouds Jewellers at Tweed City Shopping Centre, Minjungbal Dr, Tweed Heads about 11am on Friday.
“At the scene, police were told that a man allegedly entered a shop with a small spray bottle before spraying fuel onto the counter of the shop, demanding jewellery,” a NSW Police spokesman said.
“The man allegedly fled the store with jewellery and cash. No fire was lit and no injuries have been reported.”
Police arrested Nisbet on Minjungbal Dr soon after. It is alleged he was pursued by members of the public, including two off-duty Queensland police officers.
It is also alleged Nisbet was arrested as he attempted to enter a red Hyundai i30 hatchback with a Queensland number plate which contained the stolen jewellery and cash.
In the wake of the alleged robbery, a Prouds Jewellers Tweed manager said she and two other women working at the shop have been left “traumatised”, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser.
“All three ladies in question are unable to return to work, which means they are unable to provide for their families,” the online fundraiser states.
“This traumatic experience has left these ladies unable to work yet their bills and living expenses will continue.
“These ladies are currently off of work trying to deal with the psychological trauma they now have.
“I only ask that we provide financial assistance to these wonderful local ladies in order to take the financial burden off them while they obtain the help and support they require after this horrific ordeal.”
Nisbet is due to face Tweed Heads Local Court on December 16.
