An “exceptionally promising” western Sydney rugby league referee has left his peers devastated after dying suddenly in his homeland aged just 31.

A Sydney rugby league referees’ group is uniting to mourn the death of a beloved member, who died suddenly in Kenya aged just 31.

Friends and fellow whistleblowers at the Parramatta District Rugby League Referees’ Association shared the heartbreaking news after Matthias Kimari took his own life in his homeland of Kenya on January 6.

“Matthias was a beloved member of our association, joining us in 2023,’’ a tribute on the association’s website read.

“Matthias showed exceptional promise as a match official. His eagerness to learn, improve, and contribute was inspiring to all who worked alongside him.

“In just two years, he earned the respect and admiration of the membership for his dedication and positive attitude.’’

After joining the association, Mr Kimari, of Casula, officiated 96 games on weekends, including under-15 division 1 on Saturdays and A-grade women’s division 2 on Sundays.

“Matthias’ kindness, dedication and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten,’’ the tribute said.

“He has left an indelible mark on our association, and we will continue to honour his memory through our ongoing commitment to officiating excellence and community support.’’

His partner, Lucy, said the association was like a second family for Mr Kimari since he didn’t have siblings and his parents remained in Kenya.

His friend, Christopher Okutoyi, said the news came to a shock to his loved ones with “no signs” the sports-loving courier was experiencing problems.

“He was a very good person,’’ he said.

“He was cheerful, energetic all the time. He was joyful. He liked talking to people.’’

Mr Okutoyi has organised a GoFundMe fundraiser in an effort to help repatriate his body from Kenya and deliver a ”dignified burial”.

“This is not just a moral obligation, but a cultural and familial imperative,’’ Mr Okutoyi said.

“Together, let’s bring Matthias home to rest in peace among his loved ones.’’
