Police are investigating an incident in which a student at one of Sydney’s top private schools was injured in a growing social media trend, resulting in a fellow student being expelled.

A student at The King’s School, in the city’s northwest, had to be rushed to hospital in late September after being a victim of the “tap out, or blackout” TikTok challenge in which an individual is choked unconscious – or chooses to tap out to stop the attack.

Sources told The Daily Telegraph that in this instance the boy was choked by a classmate – injuring his neck in the process – before being treated by teachers and taken to hospital by his parents.

There were initially fears the young boy had fractured vertebrae in his neck and police began investigating, however it is understood the student’s injuries were not as bad as first thought and he is now recovering.

In a statement, a spokesman for The King’s School confirmed they had contacted police over the incident and launched an internal investigation, before talking to all students about the dangers of the TikTok challenge.

“There was an incident at the school … where one boy attempted to undertake the TikTok challenge ‘pass out or tap out’ on another boy … the school immediately contacted police and is assisting them with their inquiries,” the statement read.

“The first boy was suspended and has since left the school following an internal investigation into his behaviour.

“Students were called to an assembly where it was made very clear that the TikTok challenge is dangerous and stupid behaviour that has no place in the King’s community – any perpetrators can expect to have their enrolment terminated.

“The second boy is recovering and has returned to school.”

A student at the school allegedly choked another boy as the pair participated in the ‘tap out or black out’ TikTok craze.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed investigations into the incident are ongoing following the incident at the North Parramatta school.

“Police have been told a 14-year-old male student placed another 14-year-old male student in a headlock causing him to lose consciousness and fall to the floor,” the statement read.

“Staff members rendered assistance and the boy was treated at school’s medical facility before being taken by his parents to a nearby medical centre.

“He was subsequently taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for treatment and has since been released. Inquiries continue.”

Fees at The King’s School reach more than $400,000 if a student attends from Kindergarten to Year 12.
