With thousands of jobs up for grabs over the silly season the hospitality industry is begging parents — get your kids off the couch and into a summer job.

Covid staff shortages are still causing headaches for bars and restaurants going into the busiest time of year, jobs platform Barcats CEO Jeffrey Williams said.

“Without a bit of purpose, youngsters, they tend to spend a lot of time in bed or waiting for their next decision around which party they’re going to … it’s all about financial independence, don’t be that parent always buying them the latest iPhone,” Mr Williams said.

Mr Williams said 102,000 jobs are available across the country, and are ripe for the taking with overseas workers not returning to the industry in droves.

And with so many vacancies young people can be extra choosy where they want to work, if at all.

“We are learning very quickly that we relief far too much on those international workers, and actually we have to build home grown talent,” he said.

“We want to encourage those youngsters to come in and build a pathway to the future, building up the future Luke Mangans and Curtis Stones.”

It’s not just school leavers Mr Williams wants to see getting a job — he encouraged kids as young as 13 to start looking for casual positions.

Summer jobs can earn school leavers up to $4,700 for an eight week stint and provide useful training for future careers, Mr Williams said.

Penrith school leaver Joshua Sabaten said the gap between school and university can be long and lonely without a job.

The student has started hospitality training at Parramatta’s Commbank Stadium.

“You have this boring cycle of sleeping waking up, helping out at the house and then just sitting there like what is there to do,” he said.

“That’s part of the reason why I picked up this job.”
